2010 Sidmouth Folk Week

Lumbawakk had a wonderful time at Sidmouth Folk Week. Ten of us caravanned and danced most days. On two days Pete Mac played so we could do double rapper then we were joined for the following three days by Karen Townend who had been to a dancing workshop of ours and could do rapper and Go Mauve. Grateful thanks to them both! Thanks too to all the photographers who've contributed to this page, especially John our Sidmouth Stalker. Do fight your way to the bottom of the page... even if it takes you three weeks!

ON THE CAMPSITE

Thierry pointing out the entrance to the campsite becuase it was not signposter from that direction.

Lisa adopted a monkey and named her Minkey. What do they say about owners looking like their pets?

Sue relaxing in her caravan - was the cooker electric or had she never seen a pot of peas before?

Sid relaxing in his caravan... hmmm

On Thursday it was Lissa's monkey Mokey's second birthday
so Alan lit a fire and we all gathered to celebrate.

Much to noone's admiration, Hazel iced this special swiss-roll cake using two Lidl swiss rolls, icing sugar, water, chocolate spread, a knife and a plastic bag with the corner cut off.
Hazel got Mokey's age wrong! All together a great success.

The gathering included Lissa & Mokey, Hollie, Lisa & Minkey, Jess, Sue, Lynda, Sid, Willow, Karen, Simon, Alan, Thierry and Hazel who took the photo so left her cake on the tow hook

We had great fun with rocket balloons - and running across the field to collect them.
Whatever did the neighbours think?

We ate birthday cake and Mokey shared the chocolate that Sid and Lynda bought her for her birthday and everyone admired the hand crafted card.

Minkey and Mokey did an impersonation of Josh & James at Icknield Way's recent dance out.

Willow, Lissa and Hollie did Mickey Mouse impersonations with glow sticks.

LEISURE TIME

At the Ham end of the esplanade there had been a cliff fall and there was a dangling lampost which I can't see in this photograph. Don't worry, the photos get better than this.

Hazel, Thierry, Alan and Lissa fed the birds in the Connaught Gardens at the opposite end of the esplanade - one robin even ate bits off Thierry's boot!

Now you see it...

Now you don't! Robin's got it!

Minkey lays in the recovery position in the Coxy car while Mokey lounges in a rather bohemian fashion in the Brunier car.

Also in the Connaught Gardens was an amazingly bright display of flowers.
Apparently they're called something like Slothia. Aha, found it on google - celosia.
They're just outside the toilets - quite an attraction on the way to and from the car park.

This attractive arch frames a beautiful view.

These four Lumbawakkers are enjoying the beautiful view
while waiting for others lurking in the toilets or admiring the celosias.

This is the view they're admiring.

Down in town there's some more toilets with pretty gardens to wait in.
Lynda took this Guiding photograph.

The Townends and Bruniers enjoyed regular paddling sessions and
even Hazel went swimming in the sea with them once.

Sid poses nonchelantly on the undercliff path just as the tide was flowing out exposing the sand.

Sid and Lynda visited a church somewhere - isn't it lovely?

Hazel, Alan, Lissa and Thierry also spent their spare time busking on the sea front -
usually in plain clothes and with a hat out front.

RAPPER

We danced Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday on the esplanade,
once with Black Bess Border, once with Alton Morris and sometimes alone. When we did double rapper and single rapper we created lovely shadows... when the sun shone.

Here we are with Black Bess Border.

We did double rapper when we could and single rapper when we couldn't.
Careful examination of video footage has revealed that our single rapper was slighty more synchronised than our double rapper.
Amazing...

Here we are with Alton Morris.

Karen danced with us three days.

BORDER

Mokey and Minkey danced border morris with us towards the end of the week.

Spot the monkeys!

Particularly posy Hoy hands from Lynda and Simon. Neat!

John the serial Sidmouth stalker tries to sneak past without us seeing him.

At the beginning of the week there were three arms on this signpost, buyt by the end of the week the sign saying Connaught Gardens had rusted it's way to signpost heaven.
Or dropped off... Or did John the serial Sidmouth stalker 'help' it?

Sid explains to Simon the difference between a vertical stick and a horizontal stick.

Three pretty girls hanging around together...

Pete Mac arrives to play for rappers and waits while Thierry, Alan & Hazel chat with Nicole.

THE FRIDAY NIGHT PARADE

We enjoyed the parade but were disappointed to miss seeing the dancers douse the torches in the sea as we did not wait far enough towards the Ham. This year there seemed to be fewer teams in the parade, some did not go down to the beach and so they did not spread all the way along and create such an impressive sight like previous years. Next year we'll risk losing our children in the rabble and wait further along. Still we enjoyed the fireworks - although they too seemed a bit subdued too and there were no squealing fireworks!

We've all enjoyed our 'group holiday' with good time spent together and good time spent apart. We've balanced folky things and non-folky things well, and laughed like mad to find Simon had bought a toilet for his house while down there. We've all had special times chatting with people from other morris sides and enjoyed the thoroughly good weather (if you ignore two mornings) that we had this year. We've lent and borrowed as necessary - electric leads, cutlery, measuring jug, after-sun cream. We had a surreal show-and-tell session in the Cox/Brunier cars when it was raining comparing the contents of our glove boxes. And mokey's party was sooo much fun.

We left the caravan site on Saturday morning and journeyed home - with a few weeks to psyche ourselves up for the last two festivals this year.

If you've got more photos, please forward them on - especially if there of Lumbawakk!
